Finding out vegetables that are high in nutritional value and planting and maintaining them

Cohort – 1 (Bhagowanpur High School)

Task – (FD4CS2) – Find out about local and seasonal vegetables that are high in nutritional value and plant and maintain at least 3 in your school/home/community garden. Share the benefits of local vegetable production with regards to health, environment and sustainability with your class and Jagrik friends.

Experience –

The peers carried out their task in their community and had identified 3 local vegetables that are high in nutritional value.

  1. Eggplant (Brinjal) – A serving of eggplant can provide at least 5% of a person’s daily requirement of copper, fiber, manganese, B-6, and thiamine. It also contains other vitamins and minerals. In addition, eggplants are a source of phenolic compounds that act as antioxidants.
  2. Spinach (Spinacia Oleracea) – Spinach is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Eating spinach may benefit eye health, reduce oxidative stress, help prevent cancer, and reduce blood pressure levels.
  3. Cauliflower – Of the 100 grams of cauliflower in one serving, 92 grams are water. That means this veggie can help keep you hydrated. It’s also a good source of fiber. Cauliflower has a source of substances known as glucosinolates. As we chew and digest it, these substances are broken down into compounds that may help prevent cancer – they help protect cells from damage and have anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial effects.

The peers planted these plants in school garden and are maintaining and are taking care for their proper growth.

Learning –

They learnt about the nutritional value and benefits of these vegetables with regards to health. They also learnt about the importance of vegetables in regular diet.

Challenges –

When they visited the field to collect the seeds and saplings, it wasn’t easy for them to choose the correct one as it was there first time dealing with plantation.
