Task – (FD4CS1) – Visit your school canteen/MDM kitchen or two restaurants in the vicinity and do an assessment of food wastage over a week. Identify ways in which to reduce it and inspire the concerned person to accept your recommendations and take a pledge to implement them.

Experience –

The peers visited the MDM kitchen to carry out an assessment of food wastage. They spoke with the cooks for proper information and detailing. After getting the required information they made a chart and they highlighted the following points to lower the wastage of food.

  1. Everyday counting the number of students present in the classes those have the provision of MDM and providing the exact number to the MDM kitchen, so that they could cook the exact amount of food needed.
  2. Providing the exact amount of food to students that they can have. Unnecessary providing of extra food can lead to wastage.
  3. Stopping of unnecessary ordering of extra food which we can’t eat later and lead to wastage.

Later they provided this information to the concerned person in the MDM kitchen and inspired them.

Learning –

They learnt about the ways to stop food wastage. They also learnt that in India, there are many under-privileged children who can’t have proper meal in a day and suffer from malnutrition. So they made a pledge to stop wasting of food and also to stop others from food wastage.

Challenges –

When they visited the MDM kitchen, the cooks and staffs are not co-operating with them as they are afraid that this might add to further problem.
